It lived during the early Jurassic period (Pliensbachian - Toarcian, Yimen Formation) in what is now China.

It is known from the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) Lameta Formation of India. Titanosaurus is estimated to have grown up to 9–12 metres (30–40 ft) long and up to approximately 13 tons in weight.

It contains two currently recognized species, Torvosaurus tanneri and Torvosaurus gurneyi. In 1979 the type species Torvosaurus tanneri was named: it was a large, heavily built, bipedal carnivore, that could grow to a length of about 10 m (33 ft).
